One of Littlecote House's most famous supernatural residents is a large black dog that appears on the Jerusalem Staircase. This phantom canine looks completely real and solid, often sitting calmly on the stairs as if it belongs there. The dog appears to be a large, well-built animal with dark fur, and it behaves like a normal dog, sometimes looking at people who approach it. However, when anyone attempts to pet or touch the dog, their hands pass straight through it, revealing its supernatural nature. The phantom dog then typically disappears shortly after being approached. Unlike many ghostly black dogs in British folklore that are considered omens of doom, this spirit seems benign and simply occupies its favored spot on the staircase. Its origins are unknown - it may be the spirit of a beloved pet from the house's long history, or it could be connected to the various tragic events that occurred at Littlecote.
